For those of you not so much grieving the loss of the HD DVD format as you are grieving the loss of your suddenly defunct HD DVD collection, there’s some good news for you. At least, if you bought your movie from HDScape.
For a limited time only, the movie studio is allowing buyers to exchange their HD DVD titles for the same title in the Blu-ray format for $11.95 plus $.99 for shipping and handling — which also happens to be $13 more than you ever wanted to spend on a dead format.
The exchange is fairly simple. Users will be able to keep their HD DVD case and disc and will need to send in their casewrap to receive the replacement title. The replacement will arrive in 2-3 weeks and all you’ll need then is a Blu-ray player — which, of course, you probably don’t own, which, of course, you probably will have to by.
Doesn’t picking the wrong format suck?
On the other hand, for those of you who stubbornly want to hold on to your HD DVD players, the good news is the prices have dropped so much that some HD DVD movies cost roughly as much as a Beta tape — so, you can commit to a dead brand, at least for a little while, and get high-definition movies very, very cheap.
Plus, in fifty, sixty years, maybe they’ll be worth something.
